Prototype lead times depend on part complexity, but most master patterns—typically CNC-milled from wood to print specifications—can be completed in just a few weeks. Once the pattern is mounted on a mold base, prototype parts follow shortly after. This low-cost approach allows you to evaluate fit and function quickly and make any necessary design adjustments before committing to production aluminum tooling.

Thermoforming involves heating a flat plastic sheet to its forming temperature and shaping it over a mold using vacuum pressure. It differs from injection molding in that tooling costs are significantly lower—molds are often CNC-milled wood or aluminum rather than hardened steel—and lead times are shorter. Thermoforming is ideal for custom enclosures, trays, OEM parts, and medium-to-large components where cost-effective tooling is a priority.

Absolutely. Hill Plastics is equipped for every stage of production. For prototypes, we use low-cost wood or polyurethane tooling to produce initial samples quickly and affordably. For high-volume runs, our 4'x7' Rotary Thermoforming machine operates 2.5 times faster than standard single-station machines, and our 20,000+ square foot facility provides the space and staffing to scale output to thousands of parts while maintaining strict quality control.

Our CNC capabilities include two 5'x10' CNC trimming centers for primary and secondary trim operations, precision routing, contour cutting, edge finishing, precision drilling, and fastener preparation. We use SolidWorks CAD software for design and CNC interface, ensuring dimensional accuracy and repeatability. Additional fabrication operations such as heat bending, bonding, riveting, and threaded insert installation are also available as secondary processes.

Hill Plastics uses a custom quality control system that monitors production as it progresses through every stage—from tooling and forming through trimming and final assembly. Parts are inspected against drawing specifications for dimensional accuracy and appearance.
